VOLUNTEERS TRAINING FOR UPCOMING FILING SEASON
Each year, too many working families in Lorain County leave money on the table simply because tax preparation services can be expensive or confusing. Through Lorain County Free Tax Prep, residents have access to a free, trusted service that helps ensure they receive every dollar they’ve earned. Last year alone, United Way volunteers completed more than 2,200 tax returns and helped secure over $2 million in refunds for Lorain County residents. In addition to refunds, the program saved taxpayers almost $800,000 in tax preparation fees - money they can use for rent, groceries, childcare, and other essentials.
Lorain County Free Tax Prep recruits and trains community volunteers to prepare and electronically file federal and state income tax returns for low-to-moderate income individuals and families at no cost. IRS-certified volunteers help taxpayers navigate complex credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit, avoid costly filing fees, and keep more money in their pockets.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the volunteer led program is that volunteers often have no prior tax experience. Training begins each January and prepares volunteers step-by-step to pass the IRS certification exam, including an advanced certification that allows them to accurately complete federal and state tax returns. This year, United Way is excited to welcome back returning volunteers while also training many new community members who are eager to make a difference.
To ensure accessibility, tax preparation sites are strategically located throughout the county, including United Way, the Lorain Public Library, Elyria Public Library, Lorain County Office on Aging, Lorain County Public Health, First Federal Savings of Lorain, and Oberlin Community Services. Through the dedication of trained volunteers and strong community partnerships, Lorain County Free Tax Prep continues to be a vital resource helping families achieve financial stability and strengthening Greater Lorain County as a whole.
