COLLECTING, SORTING, AND DELIVERING ALL OF THE ESSENTIALS
Across Greater Lorain County, families are working hard to stay stable but too often, everyday essentials like diapers, menstrual products, hygiene supplies, and books remain out of reach. Through Collect. Sort. Deliver., United Way of Greater Lorain County mobilizes community partners and volunteers to respond quickly and effectively when those needs arise.
Collect. Sort. Deliver. begins with listening. Data from 211 First Call for Help, partner agencies, schools, and community collaboratives helps identify the items families need most right now. In response, we coordinate targeted drives to collect high-priority essentials such as diapers, tampons and pads, hygiene kits, books, and literacy kits. These items are then sorted by volunteers into ready-to-use packages and delivered directly to trusted community partners across Greater Lorain County, ensuring they reach the neighbors who need them most.
This model allows us to move quickly, reduce gaps in service, and strengthen the local network of support agencies already serving our community every day. It also creates meaningful opportunities for residents, businesses, and organizations to take part in hands-on solutions that improve stability for local families.
To sustain this work, United Way has also introduced new and creative ways for community members to support Collect. Sort. Deliver. One example is our Cocktail Hour for a Cause volunteer series, sponsored by Brightspeed. These events invite participants to contribute a $25 donation and take part in a guided volunteer project assembling kits for distribution. Thanks to Brightspeed’s sponsorship, participants enjoy two cocktails or mocktails and light appetizers while working together to make an immediate impact.
Just as importantly, sponsorship support ensures that 100% of each participant’s donation goes directly toward purchasing additional supplies in bulk. Many people are surprised to learn how far their dollar can go through Collect. Sort. Deliver. Because United Way purchases inventory through specialized vendors and large-volume partners, each contribution stretches further helping us secure more diapers, more hygiene products, and more literacy materials for families across the county.
