United Way of Greater Lorain County Names Cleveland Clinic’s Dr. Chris Babiuch as Chair of 2019-20 Annual Campaign

7.24.19 – Dr. Chris Babiuch of the Cleveland Clinic will chair the 2019-20 United Way of Greater Lorain County fundraising campaign and lead the volunteer Campaign Cabinet. Dr. Babiuch is past medical director of the Cleveland Clinic Lorain Family Health Center and practices family medicine there and at the Wellington Medical Office.
United Way’s annual fundraising campaign is held in the fall and includes opportunities for employees of local companies to donate through payroll deduction as well as for local community members to donate online or through the mail. United Way raised over $2.2 million through last year’s fall fundraising campaign and leveraged an additional $720,000 throughout the year from outside grants and matching funds.
Personal donations can be designated to United Way’s innovative Collective Impact approach which coordinates agencies sharing resources and aligning and filling gaps in services. Donations can also be designated to specific Community Collaboratives focused on improving the health, education, and financial stability of targeted neighborhoods throughout Greater Lorain County.
“I am honored to be working with the fantastic members of the Campaign Cabinet and staff with United Way of Greater Lorain County,” said Dr. Babiuch. “I have seen firsthand the impact United Way has had on the community through promoting physical activity through their United We Sweat initiative and helping those in need with 2-1-1 First Call for Help. The Campaign Cabinet is integral in ensuring the success of these initiatives through helping to fundraise and foster teamwork across all of Lorain County.”
In addition to Dr. Babiuch, the volunteer Campaign Cabinet includes Tim Alcorn - AM 930 WEOL, Keith Brown - LCCC, Brad Calabrese - UH Avon Health Center, Peggy Chamberlain - retired, Jillian Cremona - Lorain County Public Health, Tanya de Almeida - Ford Ohio Assembly Plant/UAW, Marisa Grill - PolyOne Corporation, Stacy Kilgore - PolyOne Corporation, Marge Little - retired, Kosta Mathiellis - Cleveland Clinic, Kyle Maurer - FiberSeal Northern Ohio, and Jared Persinger - Ridge Tool Company.
Alcorn, Brown, Calabrese and Kilgore have all chaired past United Way campaigns and Brown, Calabrese and Kilgore currently also serve on the United Way of Greater Lorain County board of directors.
Under the leadership of the chair, the Campaign Cabinet works year-round with United Way staff to strategize and make connections with local influencers. Campaign Cabinet members then work as an extension of the staff to follow through on the strategies.
“The chair of the Campaign Cabinet is not an honorary role, it’s a year-round commitment with multiple check-ins per month and action steps between each check-in, and Dr. Babiuch’s engagement and leadership has been phenomenal,” said United Way of Greater Lorain County executive director Bill Harper. “Having such a committed group of volunteers allows us to efficiently expand the capacity of our staff and accomplish more than we ever could with our limited staff resources.”
In addition to Dr. Babiuch’s leadership on the Campaign Cabinet, Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital is also supporting the campaign in a leadership role this year as Dr. Rebecca Starck is hosting United Way’s annual Community Leaders Reception on Aug. 13. The event is sponsored by the Cleveland Clinic and will include a social opportunity for Lorain County’s most influential business and community leaders to network with United Way leadership donors.
“Cleveland Clinic has been a long-time loyal supporter of United Way and that has continued to grow over the past few years with their presence growing in Lorain County,” said Harper. “We’re so fortunate to have Dr. Babiuch and Dr. Starck take on leadership roles this year and are excited to tap into their expertise, community connections and passion for helping others.”
