Sydney is a single mom just getting started. She lives in Elyria, is in her early twenties, and works hard to provide for her two young children. When tax season came around a year ago, Sydney went to a paid preparer as she knew very little about taxes. Despite having a very simple return, she ended up having to pay over $300. For a young mom living paycheck to paycheck, that bill hit hard.
This tax season, Sydney heard about an initiative called the Lorain County Free Tax Prep Coalition. The coalition is led by United Way of Greater Lorain County and is a collaborative effort of several organizations working with the IRS to provide free tax preparation and filing to low-to-moderate income individuals and families. The coalition has partners throughout the county so she was able to call 2-1-1 and find an appointment near her.
Sydney went in for her appointment and was shocked that she was able to file for free. It was such a change going from her tax return last year where she paid money to leaving this appointment not owing anything and even getting a return.
After her appointment, Sydney told her preparer that she couldn't wait to use the money she was receiving on her children.
Sydney was able to receive services that she didn't know existed. Because of your support, the Lorain County Free Tax Prep Coalition was able to give her the opportunity to provide more for her deserving children instead of racking up another bill. Together, we were able to help Sydney and her family. We hope you'll join us as we continue to provide support to other families like Sydney's across Greater Lorain County.
